Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is renowned for its ski resorts and winter sports, but it is also a very popular destination throughout the summer and has a wealth of outdoor activities to choose from. As the last of the snow melts, the mountains around Chamonix transform into a lush, green playground for summer sport enthusiasts! There is something for everyone, be it paragliding, rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, canyoning, golf, via ferrata or simply strolling around the streets of Chamonix with its rich array of traditional architecture and local heritage.
Experienced hikers should allow around 8 hours to complete the loop without any means of transport but only those with a high level of fitness should attempt this dizzying ascension on foot! However, you can also get to the top via the Montenvers train or L'Aiguille cable car.
To reach La Mer de Glace, the station for the Montenvers rack-and-pinion train is only a 5-minute walk from the hotel. At the top, take the path which leads to Le Plan de l'Aiguille, also known as the 'balconnord' (north facing balcony). Not only will you have spectacular views of Mont Blanc from the train, but you will also avoid the (very) long queues for L'Aiguille du Midi cable car.
Allow around 2½ hours for this relatively easy walk which is sure to leave you with many unforgettable memories.
