The Chamonix Valley is famous for its old history of palaces and luxury accommodation. One the first luxury hotels build in the area was the famous Hotel Majestic (former Grand Hotel), build in the early 1900’s, a destination of choice for the most famous aristocrats and political elite of that time. It was the golden age of British alpinism, and prestige alpine expeditions with many first ascents made by prominent figures such as Edward Whymper or Horace Walker. The Majestic Hotel has since been transformed into an apartment building, but if you are interested in Chamonix history and architecture, a visit to this monument would definitely be worth your time. You will find it near the tourism office and the "Office the Haute Montagne".
